I have a deep-rooted love for apple picking. After living in Michigan for five years, it was the official sign that Fall had arrived. On a recent trip to San Diego, to visit Matt, we decided to go apple picking in Julian, a mountain town Northeast of the City. Julian is a cute little town nestled in the mountains with great food, kind people, apple orchards and most importantly wineries. I must warn you that once you exit the interstate the road to get to Julian is narrow and windy, but the travel was well worth it. We started off at the Volcano Valley Apple Farm, which is the largest apple farm in the area with over 700 trees. The environment was warm and welcoming and the owner informed us of the areas with the best apples. After about an hour of apple picking we walked up the road to a couple-owned winery called Menghini Winery. The wine was great and the employees were super friendly and nice. The winery itself is about 7 acres offering a plethora of wine choices. The prices were very affordable, it was only $10 for six tastings plus you receive $5 back if you purchase a bottle of wine. The Syrah was my favorite while Matt liked the dessert wine the best.
Then it was time for dessert! We took a short (3 minute) drive to the downtown area to have a slice of apple pie and apple cider at the famous Julian Pie Company. The downtown Julian is quaint and charming with cafes, boutiques, and antique shops. The pie was delicious and we didn’t leave a crumb on the plate. These pies can also be purchased online and in select stores. Once we finished, we walked across the street to the Julian Grille for dinner. It was built as a cottage in the 1920’s and was transformed into a restaurant in the late 80’s. We arrived about 30 minuted before dinner started and the staff were very accommodating plus the food was delicious. Matt had the Sweet Georgia Peach Chicken dish while I had the Mushroom Rockefeller and the Beef Soup.
Our day trip to Julian was so much fun. If you’re ever in the San Diego area, the town is a must-see. It’s very cute and romantic and therefore perfect for couples.
